This will be the first meeting between Pegula and Tomova.
It looked like it was all going to plan for Pegula in Doha last week when she came through three potentially tricky matches to make it to the final.
Wins over Jelena Ostapenko, Beatriz Haddad Maia and Maria Sakkari punctuated the world number three’s run up to the title-decider where she would have some confidence coming up against the world’s top player Iga Swiatek.
Except that it did not matter beyond a certain point. Pegula showed some fight for half of the first set before losing her steam against her Polish opponent to go down 6-3, 6-0 in the end.
That was Pegula’s third defeat of the year to go with 11 victories and it allowed her to retain her number three ranking. Earlier she had also made the quarterfinal of the Australian Open only to go down to Victoria Azarenka after having led USA to a title win in the United Cup.
She should not have a lot of worries in this second round encounter though.

In her own right, Tomova would be feeling rather chuffed about her first round win over Kaia Kanepi. Kanepi was a 1/2 favourite going into that opener and for Tomova to crush her 6-3, 6-1 with so much ease should give her a lot of confidence.
Also because it was Tomova’s first win of the season in a main draw.
The bigger challenge for Tomova would now be to face up to a player of the calibre of Pegula. Here’s why.
Tomova had played four main draw matches this season before the start of this tournament and they all came against opponents of note. Maria Sakkari, Belinda Bencic (twice) and Marketa Vondrousova are all players who can make you pay because of their sheer pedigree.
And Tomova won five, three, six and one game respectively in those four matches.
Against Pegula, it could well be a repeat of the same.
Any result except for a straight-set win for Pegula will be a surprise and a win in itself for Tomova.
